[ca-gw] Greywater = water recycling?

I too think of water in terms of a hierarchy - just as heat is regarded
- everything has heat, but some materials can retain more heat and at a
higher temperature. All heat has come utility - just as all water does
- even if it's to irrigate (and fertilize) a pasture with dairy pond
effluent.

As you asked "Do we have a more detailed formula for the "recycled
water" treatment?" the attached Purple Book Summary (downloadable from
CA-DHS website as is the entire Title 22) defines the hierarchy for
"Recycled Water" in terms of quality and allowable uses.

I intend "one of these days" to chart the entire hierarchy as you listed
it in terms of Title 22 as "Section 13520 states that recycling criteria
are the levels of constituents of recycled water, and means for
assurance of reliability under design concept, which will result in
recycled water safe from the standpoint of public health."

Bill,
So you are saying graywater is not "recycled water" when it has had no
treatment?
Graywater is untreated "recycled water". I am trying to understand
the hierarchy of water
reuse. Do we have a more detailed formula for the "recycled water"
treatment ?
((biological removal of BOD, filtration, and disinfection) = tertiary
treatment

Potable Water
	for drinking
Reclaimed Water or Recycled Water ( tertiary treatment )
	for reservoir augmentation
	for spray or drip irrigation
	for toilet flush reuse
Graywater
for drip irrigation only w/ 2" cover
Blackwater
	for sewer discharge and treatment

Steve is correct--with different terms and the 'toilet to tap' debacle
taking place in San Diego in the early '90's, to avoid confusion we
(Title 22 advisory committee, WateReuse Association) decided to refer to
recycled wastewater as "recycled water" and discontinue mixing terms,
like 'reclaimed water'. Before that, it could be referred to as
'reclaimed, recycled, water reuse' 'treated wastewater' etc., sometimes
in the same document and in the same paragraph. Generally, recycled
water means treated (biological removal of BOD, filtration, and
disinfection) sewage that meets one of the standards for recycled water
under Title 22, and is distinct from graywater.

Now, graywater CAN be treated, filtered, and disinfected, and BECOME
'recycled water'... But that's a more complicated discussion, and would
probably require a fairly unique set of circumstances...

"Reclaimed" water is the old definition of what is now legally called
"recycled" water. See Water Code Section 13550 et seg., and Title 22.
These are statutorily different than greywater.

Just double checking that "claimed", "reclaimed" and "reused" water
(greywater for example) are now being referred to as "recycled" water in
the
state of CA, as per chapter 16, part a and b?

Thanks,
Elizabeth
